Diagnosing and Treating Gingivitis in Madison

Periodontist in Madison

Periodontist in Madison

Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease, and it is the gateway to advanced gum disease, or periodontitis. It is not that big a deal if you have indications of gingivitis, so long as they are diagnosed and treated in a timely fashion. That’s why our periodontist in Madison, Caryn Miller DMD, urges you to come in for a checkup every six months for a teeth cleaning.

The reason that gingivitis develops is primarily due to dental plaque. You can’t see plaque, but you can sure feel it. When you wake up in the morning, it’s responsible for that coating on your teeth that makes you glad to brush them first thing. Plaque is a bacterial substance and whatever is not eliminated by your brushing and flossing hardens into tartar. Unfortunately, there is no effective way to address tartar at home. And it is just as much a danger to your gums as plaque is. When you come to see our periodontist in Madison twice-yearly, a routine checkup will reveal signs of gingivitis and form the basis of a diagnosis. You will have your teeth professionally cleaned while here, which means eradicating tartar buildup, as well as residual plaque. Along with brushing twice per day, flossing vigorously before bed, and keeping sugar in your diet to a minimum (it fuels plaque development), your visits to our periodontist in Madison are the foundation for preventing gum disease. Periodontitis is associated with symptoms such as bleeding gums when you brush, receding gums, and persistent breath, and that’s just for starters. It can eventually lead to loss of gum and bone tissue, and even loss of teeth.

There’s no better time than now to contact our office and arrange a convenient time for you to come in for your six month teeth cleaning. Stop gingivitis in its tracks before it has the chance to result in more serious consequences.

Treating Periodontal Tooth Loss in Summit

Implants in Summit

When you think of tooth loss, which is not a pleasant thing under any circumstances, you probably think of tooth decay or the effects of an injury or accident. But the truth is that periodontal tooth loss, due to the results of advanced gum disease, is also a concern and should not be overlooked. At the office of Caryn Miller DMD, LLC, our goal is to prevent the loss of teeth for periodontal reasons, but if that is unavoidable, you won’t have to live with an incomplete smile thanks to our implants in Summit.

Gum disease has two basic stages. The early one is called gingivitis. It is typically responsible for mild irritation and redness, and can usually be reversed easily with a simple teeth cleaning, such as the one you get when you come in for your twice-yearly dental exam. For various reasons, though, sometimes patients skip or postpone their checkup. If gingivitis is already present, it will continue to progress. More obvious and alarming symptoms being to appear. Among them are persistent bad breath, bleeding when you brush, and receding gums. Erosion of gum and bone tissue can lead to one or more teeth becoming loose and even falling out. That is what we mean by periodontal tooth loss. Well, our implants in Summit are a perfect solution for treating that tooth loss, but only after your gum disease has been remedied. This may either be in the form of a deeper type of periodontal cleaning called scaling and root planing, or it may require gum surgery. Either way, when your gums heal, you will then be considered eligible for our implants in Summit, and the full restoration of your missing teeth.

Book an appointment for yourself by calling our office right now. We’re prepared to help you with periodontal tooth loss.

Summit Periodontics

Bone grafting in Summit

Summit periodontics

Summit periodontics

Most commonly, bone grafting is used as a way to make it possible for otherwise unqualified patients to get dental implants. There are, however, other uses, and they include restoration of bone tissue that was removed due to oral pathology or cancer, and as part of treatment for cysts and tumors. In addition, bone grafts can correct clefts and other congenital defects, or address traumatic injuries. Here at the office of Caryn Miller DMD, LLC, our Summit periodontics are proud to offer expert bone grafting.

Dental implants are extremely popular and it’s not at all hard to see why. They eliminate the negative features of old-fashioned bridges and dentures, require no sacrifice of surrounding tooth material, don’t need any messy adhesives, and give you full confidence to speak, chew, laugh, and smile. What sets dental implants apart from bridges and dentures, is that they are constructed in such a way that they mimic a real tooth. This means having a root that goes below the gum surface. To accomplish this, a titanium post is surgically placed in your jaw. And your jaw bone grows around the post, eventually fusing with it. In order for that to happen successfully, though, your jaw bone must meet the proper standards for thickness and strength. If it doesn’t, you can turn to our Summit periodontics for bone grafting. The procedure takes bone from elsewhere in your body (or from a tissue donor bank). That bone is transplanted into your jaw, where it will promote the growth of newer and stronger bone. Within a few months, your jaw will be considered eligible to hold a dental implant.

Our Summit periodontics are here to help. So call us right now and schedule an appointment to come in to be evaluated. Bone grafting may be right for you.

Chatham Gum Disease

Stages of gum disease in Chatham

Chatham gum disease

Chatham gum disease

If you have periodontal disease it is important that you come in to see our expert periodontist, Dr. Caryn Miller, at our periodontal practice, Caryn Miller DMD, LLC. Periodontal disease will not go away if left untreated; it is important that Chatham gum disease is taken care of so that you will be able to keep your teeth and not lose them to untreated periodontal disease.

There are many different stages of Chatham gum disease. The earliest stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. Gingivitis is caused by toxins in plaque, and usually leads to periodontal disease. You are at increased risk for developing gingivitis if you are pregnant, take birth control pills, have uncontrolled diabetes, use steroids, or use certain types of medications. This problem is usually reversed using at-home care and a series of professional regular dental cleanings. With moderate periodontitis, a root planing and deep scaling procedure is used to cleanse any pockets of debris. Chronic periodontal disease is the most common form of gum disease and occurs most frequently in people over the age of 45. When a patient has chronic periodontal disease, there is inflammation below the gum line, and there has been progressive destruction of the bone and tissue. Sometimes it seems that teeth are growing longer, but what is actually occurring is that the gums are receding. Jawbone lost to this supportive disease cannot be rebuilt. However, our periodontists can keep the disease from progressing by providing a scaling and root planing technique in combination with antimicrobial treatments. Pocket reduction surgery and tissue grafts to strengthen the bone can also be helpful. Aggressive periodontal disease has rapid loss of gum attachment, with a rapid loss of bone tissue.

Wisdom Teeth Removal in Chatham NJ

Wisdom Teeth Extractions in Chatham NJ

Wisdom Teeth Removal in Chatham NJ

Wisdom Teeth Removal in Chatham NJ

If your wisdom teeth are growing in, chances are you are noticing. That’s because when they erupt, typically in your late teens or early 20s, they tend to do so crooked or only partially. They can crowd your other teeth, damage nearby nerves and your jaw bone. And if they become impacted, you can probably expect swelling in addition to pain. It’s certainly no fun. But here at the office of Caryn Miller DMD, LLC, you can benefit from our wisdom teeth removal in Chatham NJ.

When you come in, our periodontist will do an examination and take x-rays. As part of the process, if you have an infection, it may be necessary to take antibiotics in advance of the extraction. You will be sufficiently numbed with local anesthesia before our wisdom teeth removal in Chatham NJ begins. It is our goal to make certain that while you will feel pressure, you will not feel pain during the extraction. The gum tissue above the teeth will be opened with an incision. If there is bone tissue covering the teeth, it will be removed, along with the tissue connecting the teeth to the bone. It is not uncommon to have to take the teeth out in pieces. At the conclusion of the procedure, you will most likely need a few stitches. Some bleeding is perfectly natural, and you will be offered gauze to stem it. When you go home afterward, you should rest. Place an ice pack on your face and take over-the-counter pain relief medication as needed. You should confine yourself to a diet of soft foods and drinks for the first 24 hours after our wisdom teeth removal in Chatham NJ. Choose selections like pudding, broth, and gelatin.

For quick, safe, and effective wisdom teeth extractions, contact our office immediately and let us have you scheduled as quickly as possible.
